(from Matt Rardon)
When I was about 10 years old, my aunt and uncle came out to visit us from Long Island, NY. We lived up a canyon with very few other people. When my aunt and uncle called to let us know they had arrived in Missoula and were looking for directions to our place, I was the only one at the house.
“You’ll go up a big hill and then drive along for a few more miles. When you’re coming down the other side, you’ll go down a long straightaway with a big, banked corner at the end. Right at that corner you turn off to the right. Go straight until the road T’s. Go right there. You go along toward the mountains until you see an old ramshackle cabin on your left. Follow the road to the left there. You’ll cross the river, then a canal. A little later you cross over a cattle guard. A bit after that you’ll come to a corner with a big tree right on the edge of the road. There’s a bit of a straight stretch there, and right before you get to the end our driveway goes down to the right and across the river. Just follow that back to the house.” I hung up the phone and went on about my businesss, whatever that might have been. I don’t think I told anyone, presuming they’d all know when aunt and uncle arrived.
Now, I don’t remember today how many times I may have had to repeat any of that, because I presume they wrote it down. Those aren’t the sort of directions you just recall as the time comes to recall them. The whole trip takes roughly 20-25 minutes.
Finally they got there, and my aunt came in laughing her head off. She said, “Here we are from the big city and instead of getting street names he’s giving us cattle guards and big trees. We weren’t sure how well this was going to work but we didn’t have any choice. By golly, we followed his directions and came straight to the house.”
