It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Andrew Morrison Wirth Sr., aged 89, on April 26, 2025, in Missoula, MT.
To all that knew him, Andy was a larger-than-life figure. He was tough, fearless and generous. He had a kind and gentle heart and a wonderful sense of humor that was welcomed in a world full of problems.
Born on January 14, 1936, in Mt Vernon, NY, Andy lived a life full of dedication and service. He married the love of his life, Carole Emmons, in 1958 in Pelham, NY, and together they built a loving family. Andy is survived by his beloved wife Carole, his children Andrew Wirth Jr., Kathleen Gladfelter, Bill Wirth, Virginia Wirth-Rice and Susan Bullers. He is preceded in death by son George Wirth. He also leaves behind 7 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Andy joined the Navy in 1957. He attended Adelphi University, Garden City, NY and Bates College, Lewiston ME before going to Officer Candidate School, where he became a naval aviator achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Throughout Andy's distinguished 20-year career as a pilot, he served on the USS John F. Kennedy and the USS Sylvania.
After his service in the US Navy, Andy directed emergency services at the Missoula Airport.
He was a man of strong faith, deep love for his family and unwavering patriotism.
His legacy of love, service and dedication will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
Tremendous thanks go to the truly exceptional nurses at St. Patrick hospital who provided compassionate care during his transition from this life.
A funeral service will take place at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Garden City Funeral Home with a reception to follow. Andy will be laid to rest with military honors at 2:00 pm at Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery.
