Bernie Duane Dean, aka “Little Brother,” aka “Berndog,” of Missoula, Montana, passed away on December 6, 2025, at St. Patrick Hospital with his loving sister and wife at his side after a long and courageous battle with end-stage renal disease. He was a loving husband, brother, uncle, and best friend.
Born on December 20, 1972, in Butte, Montana, Bernie lived his life with joy, compassion, and an unwavering spirit. Bernie's educational journey began at Butte Public School. He later earned his Journeyman Plumbing License, demonstrating not only his dedication to his craft but his commitment to supporting his beloved community. Throughout his life, Bernie was the embodiment of kindness. He would do anything to help anyone and had an unmatched ability to bring laughter and fun into every gathering.
Bernie had a special love for rescuing dogs, and those fortunate enough to be adopted by him lived their best lives by his side. His home was a haven for these wonderful companions, filled with warmth, play, and unconditional love. A true foodie at heart, Bernie took immense joy in cooking and sharing delightful meals, filling the kitchen with laughter and the enticing aroma of good food.
His adventurous spirit led him to enjoy varied hobbies, from attending music festivals to camping and exploring new places. He had a passion for games, frequently gathering with friends and family to enjoy card and dice games, where he would often remind everyone that it was not just about winning, but about the joy of togetherness.
Bernie was a devoted partner to his wife Rochelle, with whom he shared 25 beautiful years of marriage, having celebrated their union on October 28, 2000, in Las Vegas. Their bond was a testament to love and friendship, an enviable partnership filled with laughter and shared adventures.
Remaining family members include his sister Paula Merrick, her husband Mark, and their sons Josh (Cooper) and Kelly (Briana). He also cherished his sister-in-law Michelle Boland and her husband Joe, along with their children Michael and Briana. Moreover, he held dear his sister-in-law Stefanie Mittlestadt, her husband Duane, and their daughter Marissa. Each relationship brought joy to his life, and he was grateful for the loving support surrounding him as he fought the most difficult battles.
Bernie's legacy will be carried on by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by the warm memories of laughter, the sound of joyous gatherings, and a heart filled with love for his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Dean, and her life partner, Terry Rundle, as well as his mother-in-law, Elaine Gibson. They will be remembered for the love they gave and for the indelible mark they left on Bernie's life.
As we say goodbye to a remarkable man, we remember Bernie Dean for his boundless love, kindness, and the unforgettable joy he brought to all who had the honor of being a part of his life.
