Carma Jean (Mitchell) Gilligan, 85, of Missoula, passed away peacefully at her home on September 11, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born May 9, 1940, in Townsend, Montana, to James and Dorothy Mitchell, she lived a life of love and devotion to her family and community.
She attended Montana State University and remained a loyal Bobcat fan her entire life. Carma worked at the U.S. Forest Service for 33 years and proudly contributed to forest related research.
She was deeply involved in the Missoula community, volunteering with numerous organizations including the Missoula Business Improvement District, Police Department, St. Patrick’s Hospital, and Missoula Aging Services. In 2005, she was honored with the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
A devoted genealogist, Carma was proud of her Irish Heritage and known as the “Keeper of the Records,” writing family histories to preserve the past for future generations.
Ever the social butterfly, Carma was an active member of The Red Hat Society and a proud Kappa Delta Sister.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Charles Gilligan, in 2009 and her son, Douglas Dean Gilligan, in 1972. Carma is survived by her children, James, Carina, and John; grandchildren, Jamie, Samantha, Jessie, and Josh; great-grandchildren, Crosby, Wells, Jovie, Smith, and William; extended family, and countless friends who will always remember her generous spirit, unique sense of style and tireless service.
