Darrell enlisted in the Army in November 1948 and found himself shipped off to Germany soon after. He was part of the US Constabulatory helping to bring a sense of security after WW II. Many of his stories have come from this time in his life. Darrell was honorably discharged in August 1952 and went back home to his family in North Idaho.

In October 1959, Darrell was talked into a blind date at a square dance. He was enthralled by the dark haired girl he saw when he walked in the room. Two months later, he and Idell Lou Milne, married at the Hitching Post in Coeur d’Alene, ID, on December 12, 1959. They had three children, Steve, Julie and Sherry.

In Winter 1961, he and Idell moved to Missoula, MT where he managed Empire Fish Co. for years. When S.E. Family and friends were very important to Darrell. He spent his days reaching out to people he knew and making sure all was well. Darrell and Idell were able to go on several trips abroad with the Constabulatory. One of these trips took them to Prague, Czeckoslovakia where his father came from and he was able to visit family that still lived there.
