Don E. Thompson 1938 – 2025
Don E. Thompson, 87, of Missoula, Montana, passed away on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at St. Patrick Hospital.
Don was born in Missoula on July 6, 1938, to Edith (McKay) and Percy Thompson, Don grew up in Missoula where he attended Lowell Elementary and graduated from Missoula County High School before earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Montana. From an early age, he learned the value of community, friendship, and hard work — qualities that would define his life.
In February of 1973, Don married the love of his life, Robin (Bedard) Thompson. Together they built a beautiful life and raised two daughters, Melissa and Allison, who were his pride and joy. Family was at the center of everything Don did, and he cherished every moment with them.
Sports were a constant in Don’s life, not just as a pastime but as a passion he loved to share. Whether he was rooting for the L.A. Dodgers, the Green Bay Packers, or his beloved Montana Grizzlies. Don and Robin were Griz football “tailgaters” for 20 years. Don also excelled at Fast Pitch Softball; a sport he competed in for many years on various teams in the Missoula area.
You could often find Don and his family at their cabin at Seeley Lake. He began spending summers there when he was 12 years old, and it became the place where some of his best memories were made — swimming, boating, relaxing with family, and welcoming countless friends.
Don dedicated 33 years to the Department of Human Services, where he retired in 2011. His last position with the department was in Adult Protective Services. His work wasn’t just a job but a calling, as he poured compassion and care into helping others.
Those who knew Don will remember him as a man who truly never met a stranger. He was extremely kind, deeply caring, and quick to turn acquaintances into lifelong friends. Above all, family was at the center of his world.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and his sister.
Don is survived by his wife, Robin; daughters, Melissa A. Thompson and Allison Donn Thompson-Carnecchia and her husband Justin Carnecchia ; his grandsons Jackson and Cooper Carnecchia; his beloved four legged companion J.J. and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will cherish his memory.
His presence will be deeply missed, but the stories, laughter, and love he shared will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him.
