Donald A Calder

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Arden Calder Jr., affectionately known as Don, on July 18, 2026. Born on August 1, 1942, in the vibrant town of Butte, Montana, Don lived a life full of dedication, warmth, and a love for the great outdoors. 

Don was the cherished son of the late Donald Arden Calder Sr. and Lois Loretta Calder. He now joins his beloved family members who predeceased him: his brother Kenneth Leroy Calder, his parents, his grandmother Clara Gibbs, his grandfather Louis Marion Gibbs, and his sister-in-law Janet Calder. His legacy endures through his devoted siblings, Bruce Calder and Brenda McCullar and their children, and his stepsons, Terry Horner and family and Brian Horner and family. Don’s memory is also lovingly held by his boyhood friends, Reid Grant and Danny Lane, and close friends Terry Verworn, Melanie Miller and husband Kevin, and Jim Spooner. 

A proud graduate of Butte High School, Don pursued higher education at the Montana School of Mines and the University of Montana. Though he ardently wished to serve his country during the Vietnam War, his attempts to join the US Navy, Army, Marines, and Air Force were thwarted by a heart murmur. Nevertheless, his determination and spirit of service found expression in his professional life. Beginning his career at Buttrey's, Don eventually became a skilled carpenter and construction engineer. His hands and heart helped build homes, business buildings, and he led over a thousand workers in constructing a coal processing plant in eastern Montana. As a long-standing member of the Carpenter’s Union, Don’s work was not just a profession but a testament to his steadfast dedication and skill. 

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Don was an avid hunter and fisherman, passions that connected him to the natural beauty of his beloved Montana. Known for his trademark greeting, "Hello Yourself," Don's warmth and humor left an indelible mark on all who knew him. 

In his final days, Don faced significant health challenges with courage and grace. After bravely battling heart-related trauma and a subsequent diagnosis of inoperable cancer, he found peace and comfort in the presence of loved ones. His family expresses profound gratitude to Melanie Miller for her unwavering support during Don's illness, as well as the dedicated home care and hospice workers who provided compassionate care. 

In honor of Don's life, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization that held special significance. 

Don's life will be commemorated in a private ceremony, as the family gathers to celebrate the incredible man who touched so many lives. Though he has left this world, the echoes of his laughter, love, and legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
