Doug P. Johnson
October 27, 1928 - September 13, 2023
It is with great sadness that the family announces Doug's passing. He was born on October 27, 1928, to Claude and Helen (Lea) Johnson and raised with his siblings, Norm, George and Vera in Stevensville, Mt.
Doug met his wife, Verle Oakley, when he answered a newspaper ad and accepted a job at the French Dairy in Superior, Mt. It truly was a `Married the farmer's daughter` love story. They married on August 12, 1950 and moved to Missoula, where he was a loving dad who introduced his children to camping, fishing, hiking and spending time outdoors.
Doug hand-built the family home in 1960, continuing to live there until just two months before passing.
Doug served in the Army, was stationed in Korea, returned to work at NP Transport, later BN Transport, then took on maintenance at the Super 8 on Brooks and the Lolo Square Dance Center, where his knowledge of carpentry, building, and analytical skills gave him the title of the fix-it guy.
Always inspired to serve others, Doug volunteered at St. Patrick's Hospital for over 25 years and found joy helping out friends and neighbors; ever the handyman, he was rarely without a project. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature, and his generous heart.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. Survivors include his wife Verle, son; Jim Johnson of Denver, daughter; Vicki (Dorothy) Johnson of Florence, 2 grandkids and his chosen family, Linda Clovis and Tracy Sanders of Coeur d'Alene, Brian (Christina) Gross of Tucson and Donna Caskey of SeaTac. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Caldwell, the wonderful staff at Beehive Homes, Missoula Aging Services and Partners Hospice for their tender loving care.
A celebration of Life will be held at Missoula First United Methodist Church, 300 E Main St. on September 23, 2023, at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Doug’s name to Missoula Aging Services or a charity of your choice.
