Forest "Beryl" Johnston, Jr.

Forest Beryl Johnston Jr, 87, of Frenchtown, Montana passed away in his home on the evening of July 13, 2025 following a cardiac arrest. Beryl was born in Alabama but didn't stay long. His father’s profession and then his own took him to live in 47 of the 50 states. Montana was his last stop, and the place he called home for the past 45 years.

Beryl was a Civil Engineer and dedicated his entire career to the US Forest Service. When he retired from the Northern Region as the Director of Engineering after 40 years of service, he sat on the Board of Directors for the National Museum of Forest Service History. Beryl helped bring the dream of a museum in Missoula into reality.

Beryl was actively involved with the Frenchtown Community Church and delighted in fellowship with others there. He taught classes, served on the council, and enjoyed all the homemade pies at various potlucks.

Beryl’s wife of 64 years, Lillian Inez Johnston, will miss her best friend, yet knows that Beryl is now rejoicing with our Lord Jesus. Beryl is survived by his three daughters: Diane (and Andy), Debra, Sheila (and Rick); his 4 grandchildren: Aspen (and Lucas), Aidan, Adler, and Dillon; and his 3 great-grandchildren: Brantley, Jameson and Callie.
