John Van Hoozen

John Van Hoozen, 53, of Missoula passed away Thursday, April 6, 2023 after a battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease at his home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. April 20, 2023 at his group home (105 W. Foss Court, Missoula). Online condolences may be left at gardencityfh.com.

James “John” Van Hoozen was born March 5, 1970 in Great Falls, Montana. He graduated high school despite his cognitive impairment. He always brighten the room with his smile and loved his fellow students. John enjoyed competing and participated in many Special Olympics throughout his life.

John was a person who loved everyone he met and would always introduce himself.  He loved being a part of a family, whether it was his church family, MDSC (Missoula Developmental Service Corporation) family or his chosen family.  John always liked to be in charge and wanted to lend a helping hand.  He enjoyed bowling, spending time with his friends, and especially cheering on his favorite team, the Seattle Seahawks.  John will always be remembered for his infectious smile and his love for his MDSC Staff, friends and his family. 

Left to cherish his memory are his chosen family: Mom, Kelly Johnson; sister, Shelley Johnson; countless staff and friends from the MDSC and the Missoula community.
