Nancy Gagner

1946 – 2025

Nancy Gagner passed away peacefully in July 2025 after a courageous 15-year battle with cancer. She was 79.

Nancy was born in Missoula, Montana, in 1946 to Fred and Erna Minster and lived in Missoula her entire life. She attended and graduated from Missoula County High School. Nancy was the youngest of five siblings and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Erna Minster, and her siblings Ethel, Jim, Ed, Bruce, and Delores.

On December 7, 1969, Nancy married Bob Gagner. They shared a full and adventurous life together until Bob’s passing in 2001. During their 32 years of marriage, they enjoyed fishing, camping, and snowmobiling all across Montana. They traveled in their motorhome, often towing their boat behind, and spent many memorable days on the water at Lake Francis and Rainbow Lake—two of their favorite spots.

In 1986, Nancy and Bob founded Hellgate Plumbing and Heating, building a business rooted in integrity and service. After Bob’s passing, their son Jason proudly carried on the family legacy, taking over the business in 2001.

In 2004, Nancy met Jack Strain, and the two quickly formed a close and loving bond. Over the next 20 years, they shared life, laughter, and countless adventures. They traveled across the region in search of hot springs, enjoyed four-wheeling, and spent peaceful time at Jack’s mountain cabin. They were a steady presence at their grandkids’ sporting events—especially travel softball—and loved following them across Montana and beyond. Nancy’s granddaughter Jayden shared a special bond with her grandma, spending time at her house and going on shopping trips to Kohl’s and Walmart.

In later years, Nancy and Jack split their time between Montana and Yuma, Arizona, enjoying the warm winters and the slower pace of life in the desert.

Even in her final days, Nancy never stopped thinking of others. She was always asking, “How’s everyone doing?” and “How’s the business?”—even when she was very sick. Her typical response when asked how she was doing: simply, “So-so.” Never a complaint.

Nancy was a master gardener who took great pride in her vibrant flower beds, lush houseplants, and beautiful yard. Her home was always spotless and welcoming—every detail in place, with no dust in sight. Her car was just as immaculate.

She had a soft spot for animals, especially her dogs, who were always spoiled with love and treats. She adored her grand-dogs just as much, making sure they, too, were part of the family.

She is survived by her partner of 20 years, Jack Strain; her son Jason (Brandi) Gagner; stepdaughter Jolene (Shawn); grandchildren Jayden, Noah, Avery, and Kaitlyn (Lathan); great-grandchildren Beckham and Berkeley; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

At Nancy’s request, there will be no formal service. A private burial will be held with close family and friends.

Nancy will be remembered for her quiet strength, her kind and listening heart, her love for animals, her beautiful gardens, and the unconditional care she gave to her family. She spent her life worrying about everyone else—and in doing so, made all of our lives better.
