Nicholas Roy Moderie

August 5, 1959 — October 20, 2025

Missoula

Nicholas Roy Moderie, age 66, passed away peacefully in his home from pancreatic cancer on October, 20, 2025. He was born to Joseph P. and Elizabeth R. (Beccari) Moderie on August 5, 1959, in Missoula Montana. Nick came from a large family, being the 9th child in a family of 14. He was raised in Missoula and lived almost his entire life in his home town, and state that he loved.

Nick was a big-hearted loving man, always there for others, always showing unconditional love. He was a wonderful and supporting father to his children, step children and grandchildren. Nick was a father figure and mentor to his numerous nieces, nephews and a supporting pillar in his extended family. He lived his life with a positive attitude that radiated to all that knew him. He was good natured, funny, and quick witted. Always making jokes, and laughing at them harder than anyone else. He was hardworking, supportive and always willing to lend a hand.

Nick worked most of his life at Two J’s Produce and Eagle Satellite as well as running the family business, Big Sky Wood Products with his brother. Nick enjoyed playing softball, coaching youth basketball, camping at Lake Alva with his family, gardening, and watching Missoula Sports. Usually his alma mater Hellgate High or anything one of his children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews were playing in. He tried to make it to all of them. He loved yelling at/for his Minnesota Vikings on Sundays and was always a loyal fan. Most of all Nick was an avid Montana Grizzlies fan. Growing up in Missoula he attended Griz football, basketball and other Griz sports events from early childhood. Griz football was one of his biggest loves, attending games at Dornblaser Stadium until Washington Grizzly Stadium was built in 1986. Nick never missed a single game in the 39 years at the “Mecca of FCS Football” until October 11 of this year, when his illness made it impossible for him to attend. One of his favorite things was to watch the opponents’ busses come in and then size up the team as they unloaded off the bus. Nick had the pleasure of traveling to some away games and national championship games to support the Griz. Nick did not want anyone to miss a game, home or away this year because of him, he asked that his memorial service be held after the regular season and before the Griz win the championship this year. Nick was always believing and thinking positive! His service is scheduled for November 29, 2025, after the Griz beat the Bobcats.

Nick has passed on to join the love of his life Brenda Croucher Moderie, his daughter Billie Jean Maschke Moderie, his parents Joseph and Elizabeth, along with brothers Donald and William Moderie.

Nick is survived by his daughter Kim Moderie (Warren Harris), son Derek Moderie (Amber), son Thymer Croucher, grandchildren Jayden Mitchell, Patience Mitchell, Lincoln Harris, Trentin Harris, Saylor Croucher, Roman Wilson, and Quinnton Wilson. His brothers Kenneth Moderie (Marianne), Ronald Moderie (Cheryl), Daniel Moderie (Mary), Michael Moderie, Charlie Moderie, Joseph Moderie, John Moderie, and sisters Betty Jo Baker (James), Marianne McCracken, Nancy Haniszewski (William), and Marchita Mays (Herschel).

Nick also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, aunts, uncles and many who are not of blood but are family to him. He was loved and respected by many; Nick always had an open heart filled with compassion and an open door.

Nick will be truly missed, as many have said he was one of the good ones! Nick was about love, honesty, hard work and giving. He put his whole heart and soul into his family and everything he did. There is no way to sum up his life in a few words, he touched so many lives. Nick would not want us to stop embracing the love of life because he is gone, he would want us to move forward with love, kindness, and memories of him in our hearts. Please join us to celebrate his life and memories, in Missoula at Garden City Funeral Home on November 29, 2025 at 1pm.
