Richard M. Boe

Missoula

Richard M. Boe passed away January 25, 2023, surrounded by family at home at 92 of natural causes. 

He was born June 5, 1930, in Sidney, MT to Rasmus and Mabel (Moen) Boe, their first child.  He grew up on the family farm working their land as well as friends’ and neighbors’. 

He graduated from high school in Sidney in 1948.  He joined the Navy March of 1951.  He served in San Diego and Seattle and was honorably discharged in May 1953.  Upon returning from his service, he met Arnelda Sorum.  They were married August 28, 1955, in Sidney.  They moved to Billings and welcomed Timothy and then Kristi.  In 1958, the family moved to California and settled in a wonderful neighborhood in Cypress.  Lisa was born completing the family.  Many a camping, fishing, hiking trip was enjoyed with extended family. 

The family returned to Billings in 1971.  Dad began building quality homes in addition to his day job of accounting and bookkeeping.  He built the family home in Kimberly Heights.   While in Billings, he began and ended his movie career being cast as an extra in “The Missouri Breaks” starring Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson, both whom he met. 

A move in 1977 and building a home on One Horse Creek Road in Florence, MT.  He took a position as Head Custodian at the Florence Carlton School while Lisa attended High School.  Over the years, he enjoyed farming the five acres with horses, cows and a pig.   

Next, he would build their last home in Missoula in 1991.  He continued his tax and accounting services, attending Griz games, and many camping and fishing trips.   

Being an artist was one of his proudest accomplishments.  He studied painting throughout his life.  His paintings hang in many friends’ and family members’ homes. 

Dad/grandpa would never turn down an invite to breakfast.   

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter in law Carrie Boe, brother in law James Johnston and great granddaughter Shayna Callahan. 

He is survived by his wife Arnelda Boe, sister Margaret Johnston, brother Ray (Rita) Boe, son Timothy Boe, daughter Kristi (Pat) Bachman, and Lisa (Jerry) Schindler.  Grandchildren Cody Beck, Kyle (Amanda) Boe, Kendal (Sam Arroues) Boe, Sydney (Cody) Callahan, Faith Schindler, Cortney Bachman, Lindsey Bachman and Reed Bachman.  And great grandchildren Seth and Reece Callahan.  And of course – many, many close extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.   

He will be laid to rest at the Western Montana Veterans Cemetery in Missoula in a small, family ceremony. 

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
