Richard Lee Van Haecke, 80, of Missoula, passed away on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at Community Medical Center from complications of multiple health challenges.
Richard was born on April 14, 1945, in Libertyville, Illinois to Andrew Henry and Catherine Elizabeth Van Haecke. He attended school in Illinois and in 1965, enlisted in the United States Army. He proudly served his country, where he fought in combat during the Vietnam War. Trained as an Airborne Infantryman, he earned his parachutist wings and carried the crossed rifles of the Infantry-symbols of courage, discipline, and service on the ground. He attended Officer Candidate School and became a first lieutenant. He was then assigned to a Green Beret team and was sent to Viet Nam where he proudly served his country. His role as a Green Beret reflected his strength, resolve, and quiet professionalism. His military service remained a source of deep pride throughout his life.
He graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. In 1972, he married Diana Olson and the couple moved to Montana in late 1974. Though they later divorced, they remained friends until his passing. He worked at the Montana Developmental Center in Boulder and later the State of Montana Developmental Disabilities Program in Helena until his retirement.
Richard loved hiking, camping, and kayaking. He was also a voracious reader and enjoyed listening to music and going to concerts. He kept meticulous care of the yard. Richard was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.
For the past 21 years, Richard shared his life with Paula Sherwood, his beloved partner and constant companion. Their relationship was defined by deep love, unwavering support, and devotion to one another. Paula stood beside Richard through life’s challenges and triumphs and was truly his rock, his best friend and the love of his life.
He was a devoted father to his two children, Carrie Van Haecke (Caleb Pulver) of St. Paul, MN and Andrew Van Haecke (Irene), of Memphis, TN whom he loved deeply. Carrie and Andy were his greatest source of pride and joy. They were always there for their dad and they meant everything to him. One of his many highlights with them was attending a Green Bay Packers game at Lambeau Field.
Richard was also a proud and loving grandfather to his three grandsons, Owen Pulver (8), Krew Van Haecke (5) and Rory Van Haecke (2). He adored his boys and took great satisfaction in watching them grow, always speaking of them with pride. He loved their homemade cards and art, face timing with them, and of course seeing them in person whenever possible. They loved their “Papa”.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather Gordon Blumenschein, and his brother, Tom. He is also survived by his sister Terry O’Brien, sister-in-law Judy Van Haecke, cousin Denny Brenton, nieces Michele, Kathleen, Karen and Lisa and Paula’s large extended family, all of whom loved him very much.
Richard will be remembered for his strength, loyalty, and deep love for his family. He was a most honorable man with an amazing smile and infectious laugh. His legacy of service, resiliency, and devotion will live on through the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful and supportive people at Community Medical Center, Community Cancer Care and Prevention Center, Partners in Home Health, Stillwater Health, and Tigris Nephrology, who journeyed with Richard through the years. We would like to give a special acknowledgement to Dr. Shahid Chaudhary, whose care and compassion were always comparable to none.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held in Missoula on July 27, 2026 with interment at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery at 10:00 am at 1911 Tower St. A reception will follow at the Garden City Funeral Home located at 1705 W. Broadway.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s Cancer Research Fund, the Humane Society of Western Montana or a charity of your choice.
