Robert "Bob" Monahan, 73, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 15, 1953, in Anaconda, Montana, where he grew up and formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Bob was a man who believed in hard work and was never afraid of a challenge. He began his career as a carpenter before returning to college to earn a degree in accounting. Combining his craftsmanship with an entrepreneurial spirit, he started his own construction company, building and renovating homes and cabins throughout western Montana. Whether constructing something new or restoring something old, Bob took great pride in doing the job right.
Montana's mountains, rivers, and forests were where Bob felt most at home. He especially loved caring for property at Moose Lake, embracing the simplicity of living "off the grid" in the mountains. He found great joy fishing, especially on Rock Creek, where he built a cabin that became a special place for family and friends. He also looked forward to annual hunting trips in the Big Hole with lifelong friends, creating memories and stories that would be shared for years.
Bob was a devoted fan of Montana Grizzly football and a proud season ticket holder for many years. Few things brought him more joy than cheering on the Griz on crisp fall Saturdays. His passion for Grizzly football became a family tradition, one he proudly passed on by sharing his North End Zone seats and his enthusiasm with his children.
Above all, Bob was devoted to his family. He taught each of his children the value of hard work, self-reliance, and an appreciation for the outdoors. His example shaped their lives in countless ways, and his love of Montana's rivers, mountains, and open spaces lives on through them. Bob was also grateful for the love and support of his family, including the enduring friendship and care of Mary, whose kindness and presence remained a meaningful part of his life.
Bob will also be remembered for his quick wit, sharp sense of humor, and the remarkable friendships he cultivated throughout his life. He was fortunate to have an incredible group of friends who stood beside him through every season of life, and their loyalty and love meant the world to him.
He is survived by his daughter, Megan Monahan; his son, Patrick Monahan, daughter-in-law Amanda Monahan, and grandchildren Madeline, Mackenzie, and Max Monahan; his daughter, Maura Monahan; his daughter, Allison Follmer, and son-in-law Luke Follmer; his sister, Margaret "Peggy" Paull, and brother-in-law John Paull; his sister, Lori Hester, and brother-in-law Curtis Hester; his brother, Donald "Donny" Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Monahan; his mother, Mary "Map" Smith; and his brother, Patrick Monahan.
A funeral Mass celebrating Bob's life will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church in Anaconda, Montana. A reception will follow the service. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate Bob's life.
Bob built much more than homes and cabins. He built a life rooted in hard work, enduring friendships, cherished family traditions, and a deep love for Montana. Those are the things that will stand as his lasting legacy.
Bob's legacy lives on in the homes he built, the mountains and rivers he loved, the lessons he taught, and the family and friends who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
