Stephen R. Gerard, 92, of Missoula, MT has passed away on May 10, 2026.
He was born on December 22, 1933 in Johnstown, PA to Ralph and Angeline Gerard. He grew up in Latrobe, PA. Stephen lived his life with a strong work ethic and sense of duty. As a proud marine and Korean War veteran, Stephen was recognizable by his Korean veteran hat that he wore daily. Upon returning home, he met a young lady named Jeanne. They married in March 1957. The couple built a life filled with dedication, love, and family.
Stephen worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. Following a layoff, he took on a new challenge and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Whittier College. The first in his family to earn a college degree. Stephen was then employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the family moved to the Navajo Reservation, Arizona. Upon his retirement, the family moved to Missoula where Stephen planned to enjoy fishing.
He had a lifelong passion for cars, trains, politics, and fishing. He loved to share his knowledge with others. Stephen also enjoyed ballroom dancing, gambling at the casino, and playing cards with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jeanne; his son, Kenneth; his parents, Ralph and Angeline Gerard; his brothers: Felix, Jack, Paul, and Ralph Jr.; and his sisters: Karen and Missy.
Stephen is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Gerard; his grandsons Jason White, Weston White and Scott Gerard; his great grandchildren, Alexis and Ian; and his sister, Angela (Gerard) Lockridge. As well as many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind friends and fellow veterans who will cherish his memory.
A celebration of life service honoring Stephen’s life will be held on June 8, 2026 at 12:00pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Following the service, there will be a graveside military service at Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery. Afterwards, family and friends are invited to gather for refreshments at St. Paul Lutheran Church, room #210.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider dontating to St. Jude's Hospital instead.
