Susan Kane

Sue Kane was born April 27, 1951 in San Mateo, California. She overcame (what she sometimes called “a tremendous inconvenience”) all the challenges that came her way throughout her 74 years. Sue was totally blind.

Learning braille at a very young age, Sue attended Burlingame High School, University of Pacific and Texas Women’s University, where she earned her M.S. degree in Music Therapy.

After her graduation she traveled to Cleveland and began a teaching position involving five universities. These universities included: Cleveland State, Case Western Reserve University, Baldwin-Wallace, Oberlin and Wooster Colleges. She became the Director of Consortium’s Bachelor Degree Program in Music Therapy.

Moving back to California in the mid-eighties, she put down her teaching skills and earned a certificate of Acupressure and opened a practice for a couple of years. In the meantime, with computers just arriving on the market, she self-taught herself how to use (with talking apps) and navigate through the complexities of using a computer… which eventually led her back into the teaching world. Her last job was teaching visually impaired students how to use a computer. In 2014, Sue packed up her belongings and moved to Missoula to be with family.

Music was Sue’s greatest love. She was involved in the Skyline College Concert Choir for many years. She travelled to New York to join four other choirs to perform a concert commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Carnegie Hall. She also sang in church choirs, both in California and Montana. She was a volunteer with San Mateo Hospice Service offering comfort to patients and their families with her lovely singing voice.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Guide Dogs for the Blind, San Rafael, California or Big Sky Hospice in Missoula would be appreciated.
